San Francisco mother accused of drinking and driving with child in tow

42-year-old Sarah Thomison Boushey is accused of drunk driving after an August 19th incident that found her allegedly guzzling vodka in a movie theater and subsequently crashing her car three times.

Boushey had taken her 4-year-old daughter to the Century theater in Daly City for a showing of "The Smurfs."

A witness at the scene attempted to speak with Boushey, who was reportedly incoherent. Bouchey would not reveal her name to Daly City police officers who arrived at the scene; the driver's four-year-old daughter informed the police that her mother's name is "Sarah," adding, "My mom is drunk."

Boushey failed to appear at her scheduled arraignment with San Mateo County last Wednesday morning.

Daly City police reported finding a vodka bottle in Boushey's purse; according to San Mateo District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe, her blood alcohol level tested at .35.

Two other women were injured when the truck, which was carting beer kegs through the tailgating area, suddenly accelerated.

Witnesses at the scene described the driver as appearing "dazed" after the accident. It is unclear whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the incident.

Nancy Barry was pronounced dead at 10:15 am at Yale-New Haven hospital. 30-year-old Sarah Short is currently hospitalized in critical, but stable condition; Harvard employee Elizabeth Dernbach suffered minor injuries as a result of the accident.

New York Bike Share Program to Launch Summer 2012

"The Bloomberg administration announced Wednesday it had selected a Portland, Ore., company to run an ambitious bike-share program in New York City...

Amid unease about exactly how the city will integrate 600 rental stations and 10,000 bicycles into the crowded streets and sidewalks of New York, the official rollout date of the program has been pushed back until the summer of 2012.

Many other kinks and details are still to be worked out, like the pricing structure and the exact locations of the rental stations. Also missing are the requisite major sponsors to help defray the cost of the program. But when fully implemented, the program would become the largest bike-share effort in the country...

The program will encourage participants to purchase long- or short-term memberships that include an unlimited number of trips of up to 45 minutes; additional fees will apply for longer trips. A yearly membership will cost $100 or less; other pricing details have yet to be made final."

Proposition M Lawsuit Dismissed

"A federal appeals court on Tuesday dismissed a challenge by property owners to a voter-approved San Francisco ordinance that prohibits landlords from coercing tenants to move out.

The November 2008 ballot measure, Proposition M, barred owners from trying to get tenants to leave by offering them money, accompanied by 'threats or intimidation.' A lawsuit by the 1,500-member Small Property Owners of San Francisco Institute argued that the law was vaguely worded and violated landlords' freedom of speech."

Suggested Bike Routes for Cyclists Looking to Keep Away From the Golden Gate Bridge

7x7 has shared four great bike rides for people that are looking to steer clear of the Golden Gate Bridge during the remodel of it's bike lane.

"Planet of the Apes Ride: 36 miles round trip
This 36-miler has been a long-time favorite—and sometimes secret—ride for SF cyclists. This ocean-centric route starts at the SF Zoo and ends at the scenic AYH Hostel in Montara, a fun overnight option if you’re into touring. Named after the abandoned stretch of highway that makes you feel like you might actually be the last human on earth, the Planet of the Apes ride is a great alternative to some of Marin’s popular rides. Ride map here.

Mt Diablo Summit: 38 miles loop, plus a BART ride
East Bay riders know the hulking Mount Diablo well. Its glorious views and steady climb make it a favorite for those who live at its base. With the bridge closure, SF riders should get to know this great ride as well. Consisting of nearly 3,500 feet of climbing, Mt. Diablo can be a real leg burner, but on a sunny day there’s no better place to be. Rumor has it that on really clear days you can see Yosemite’s Half Dome from its apex, but even on ordinary ones you can see all the way to the Farallons. Take BART to the Walnut Creek station and make your way through this hilly wonderland. Ride map here.

Peninsula Pedal: 43 miles with Caltrain return or 86 round trip
This is a favorite commuter rider for the growing number of Peninsula tech workers who have opted for their own legs over the shuttle. (This particular map comes from a group of Google cyclists). Consisting of the Cañada bike lane and fun Hillsborough rollers, this ride is a gorgeous and relatively car-free medium length ride. In addition to pedaling along the reservoir, this route has plenty of peel off options, making it great for new riders. Start anywhere in the city and make your way to Skyline Blvd. You can take Caltrain home from Mountain View or Palo Alto, or go the full 86-miles out and back. Added bonus—this ride will give you some of the Marin sun you might be missing. Ride map here.

City Circuit: 25-mile loop through SF
Even though San Francisco rests on a small plot of land, there’s still plenty of great riding within the city limits. We’ve got ocean views, steep hills and plenty of scenic roads to keep your legs pumping. Here’s a perfect 25 miler that hits up the Embarcadero, Ocean Beach and Twin Peaks, among other city landmarks. And if you’re quick, you can get it all done before the workday even starts. How great is that? Ride map here. "

Temporary Solution for Golden Gate Bridge Pedestrian/Cyclist Congestion

The Golden Gate Bridge officials have attempted to divide cyclists and pedestrians in an attempt to alleviate the congestion that has resulted since the west sidewalk of the bridge has been closed for construction. The west side of the bridge is normally reserved for cyclists on weekends, but since the 31st of May, cyclists and pedestrians have been forced to share the east-side, resulting in overcrowding.

Officials temporary solution? To lay down painted lines separating pedestrians and cyclists.

27-Year-Old Cyclist Injured on Golden Gate Bridge

27-year-old cyclist, Sarah Kaplan, was recently injured while riding her bicycle across the Golden Gate bridge. The west sidewalk of the bridge, which is usually reserved for bicyclists on weekends, has been closed since the 31st of May, causing major congestion on the east sidewalk.

As a result of the overcrowding on the east sidewalk, Kaplan was unable to avoid a woman taking scenic photos, and fell onto the ground after crashing into the bridge railing. Kaplan suffered a broken elbow and will be unable to ride her bike for as much as two months. The west sidewalk of the bridge is scheduled to reopen at the beginning of October.

Judicial Council Budget Decisions

"This was an historic session of the Judicial Council, called to make budget decisions for the branch for the current fiscal year, bound to have a dramatic impact on the public. On top of $652 million in cuts in the last 4 years, legislators and the governor chopped the court’s operational funds for this year by an unprecedented $350 million – ongoing cuts – and raided another $310 million from the court construction fund. The council met to decide how to deal with the financial body blow.

Council members acknowledged that there’s more pain to come. If state revenue forecasts don’t meet specified targets by this December, there will be additional cuts early next year."

This month HBO will feature Hot Coffee, a documentary chronicling the infamous McDonald's case.

"Seinfeld mocked it. Letterman  ranked it in his top ten list. And more than fifteen years later, its infamy continues. Everyone knows the McDonald's coffee case. It has been routinely cited as an example of how citizens have taken advantage of America's legal system, but is that a fair rendition of the facts? Hot Coffee reveals what really happened to Stella Liebeck, the Albuquerque woman who spilled coffee on herself and sued McDonald's, while exploring how and why the case garnered so much media attention, who funded the effort and to what end. After seeing this film, you will decide who really profited from spilling hot coffee."

"Eye-opening indictment of the way big business spins the media." -- Variety

"Stunning debut...Sends audiences out of the theater thinking in a brand new way."

San Francisco Board Meeting on Changes to Leash Law in Golden Gate National Recreation Area

San Francisco Board of Supervisors committee held a hearing at City Hall Monday regarding a federal proposal to restrict parts of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area where dogs can go without a leash.

The hearing at the board's Land Use and Economic Development Committee was called for by Supervisor Scott Wiener in response to the proposal issued in January by the National Park Service.

The proposal would reduce the size of off-leash areas for dogs at 21 different parts of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, including Ocean Beach, Fort Funston, Crissy Field and Fort Mason.

While some speakers opposed the proposal, others supported it, stating that the unleashed animals can pose a danger to individuals in the park.
